RC Status Check Online
Verify vehicle registration details, ownership history, and more — instantly.
What You'll See in a Verified Report
Before finalizing any used car deal, it is critical to know what legal and operational tags are associated with the vehicle. An online RC check compiles data on multiple dimensions to prevent legal liabilities.
Ownership validation: Verify first-hand registered names and fathers' titles to avoid fraud.
Active loan status: Know if the car has hypothecations or financier liens recorded.
Safety checks: Audit third-party insurance validity, fitness timelines, and PUC compliance.

What is a Registration Certificate (RC)?
A Registration Certificate, commonly known as RC, is an official document issued by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) that serves as legal proof that a vehicle is registered with the Government of India. It is mandated under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and every vehicle operating on Indian roads must have a valid RC.
The RC is essentially your vehicle's identity card. It contains all critical information about the vehicle — from its make and model to the registered owner's name, engine number, chassis number, fuel type, and registration validity. Without a valid RC, driving a vehicle on public roads is illegal and can result in penalties, vehicle seizure, and legal action.
The RC is issued in two stages. A temporary RC is provided at the time of purchase and is valid for up to 30 days, during which the vehicle must be permanently registered. The permanent RC is then valid for 15 years for private vehicles, after which it must be renewed.
What Information Does an RC Contain?
An RC card contains the following key details about a vehicle and its registered owner:
- Vehicle Details: Make, model, body type, colour, manufacturing year, engine number, chassis number, fuel type, engine capacity (CC), and seating capacity.
- Owner Information: Full name of the registered owner, father's/husband's name, registered address, and mobile number.
- Registration Number: The unique alphanumeric number assigned by the RTO (e.g., DL 01 AB 1234) that acts as the vehicle's official identity.
- Registration Date and Validity: The date when the vehicle was first registered and the expiry date of the RC. Private vehicles have a 15-year validity from registration.
- Insurance & Hypothecation: Active insurance policy details and financier details if purchased on loan (indicates lien status).
Why Should You Check RC Status Online?
Checking a vehicle's RC status online is essential in several situations, especially if you are buying, selling, or transferring a vehicle. Here are the key reasons:
Verify Ownership
Confirm whether the seller is actually the registered owner. This protects you from buying stolen or fraudulently transferred vehicles.
Check Hypothecation Status
If purchased on loan, check if the lien has been cleared. Buying a car with active hypothecation can lead to severe legal and financial issues.
Confirm Insurance Validity
Instantly verify active coverage. Driving without valid insurance attracts heavy fines of up to ₹4,000 and vehicle seizure.
Check Expiry & Validity
Make sure registration is legal. Private vehicle RCs expire after 15 years, and driving an expired vehicle is highly illegal.

RC Validity, Renewal & Transfer Details
RC Validity and Renewal
Private Vehicles: RC is valid for 15 years from the date of registration. After that, it must be renewed every 5 years with an RTO physical inspection.
Commercial Vehicles: RC is valid for 5 years initially and is subject to mandatory periodic fitness tests.
Penalties: Driving with an expired RC can lead to fine penalties of up to ₹10,000 or impounding of the vehicle under the Motor Vehicles Act.
RC Transfer Status Check
When selling a vehicle, ownership must be transferred at the RTO within 30 days. To track application status:
Step 1: Visit parivahan.gov.in.
Step 2: Go to "Know Your Application Status" under Vehicle Related Services.
Step 3: Enter your application ID to trace if it is approved or pending dispatch.
Key RTO Processes & Documents
Digital RC via DigiLocker
You can pull a legally valid digital copy of your RC via DigiLocker or mParivahan. Log in with your Aadhaar, search for "Ministry of Road Transport," select "Registration of Vehicles," and enter the plate code. Digital e-RCs have the same legal authority as physical smart cards.
Loan Hypothecation Removal
After loan foreclosure, collect NOC and Form 35 from your financier bank within 21 days. Submit these along with the original RC, insurance copy, PUC certificate, and application fees at your local RTO to delete hypothecation records and establish full ownership.
How to Get a Duplicate RC
If your smart card is lost or stolen, immediately file a police FIR. Submit Form 26 along with the FIR copy, financier signature (if on active loan), identity proof, address proof, active insurance, and PUC certificate to your original RTO to receive a duplicate card.
Required Documents for New RC Issuance
When registering a new vehicle, the registering dealer or applicant must present these documents at the Regional Transport Office:
- Form 20 (registration application)
- Identity Proof (Aadhaar, Passport, Voter ID)
- Address Proof (Aadhaar, utility bills)
- Sale Certificate/Invoice from dealer
- Valid Insurance Certificate (Mandatory)
- Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate
- Temporary Registration Certificate
- Road Tax payment receipts
