The Dark Side of Keyless Entry: When Convenience Becomes Vulnerability

Keyless entry systems are marvelously convenient, until they become the easiest way for thieves to steal your car. The technology that lets you open your door without touching a key also lets criminals do the same.

How Relay Attacks Work

Your keyless fob constantly broadcasts a weak signal. Relay attackers use two devices: one near your house to pick up the fob's signal, another near your car to replay it. Your car thinks the key is present and unlocks.

This isn't theoretical. Relay attacks now account for a significant portion of car thefts in developed markets. The equipment costs Rs 5,000 and is available online.

Manufacturer Negligence

The fix is simple: motion-sensing fobs that stop transmitting when stationary, or ultra-wideband technology that prevents relay attacks. Some manufacturers implement these. Most don't, because security costs money and consumers don't understand the risk.

Protecting Yourself

Store your keys in signal-blocking pouches (Faraday bags). Keep keys away from doors and windows. Disable keyless entry if your car allows it. Add physical steering locks for high-risk vehicles.

Convenience shouldn't mean vulnerability. Demand better from manufacturers.

The Bigger Picture

These concerns aren't isolated incidents but symptoms of systemic issues in India's automotive retail landscape. The power imbalance between dealers and consumers, combined with information asymmetry, creates conditions ripe for exploitation. Understanding this context helps buyers protect themselves and push for better practices.

Practical Implications

Beyond the obvious frustrations, these issues have tangible financial consequences. Buyers who fall victim to these practices may find themselves underwater on their purchases within months. The hidden costs accumulate, from overpriced accessories to unnecessary add-ons, eroding the value proposition that initially attracted them to a particular vehicle.

What Buyers Can Do

Empowered consumers are the best defense against questionable practices. Thorough research before entering a showroom, willingness to walk away from unfavorable deals, and sharing experiences with fellow buyers create accountability. Online forums and owner communities have become invaluable resources for cutting through marketing noise.
